Locating a data centre beside generation can shorten one part of the power problem. It does not establish that every hour of a continuous computing load will be supplied by that generator.

Soluna announced an agreement with Applied Digital on October 21 to develop a planned 50 MW critical-IT facility at Dorothy 3 in Texas. The release says the first phase is expected to draw from both the 150 MW Briscoe Wind Farm and the grid. Closing remains subject to conditions including definitive power agreements, leases and a tax-abatement approval. Soluna Dorothy 3 partnership announcement.

Keep capacity and energy separate

The wind farm’s nameplate power and the data centre’s IT capacity are not directly interchangeable. Generation varies; computing equipment and supporting systems have their own load profiles. A renewable supply claim therefore needs a time boundary and a treatment of hours when local output does not cover demand.

Our assessment is that co-location creates an infrastructure option worth examining, but the current announcement does not demonstrate round-the-clock matching or a completed connection. The non-binding tenant letter of intent described by Soluna is also separate from an executed lease.

Contracts precede an operating result

In the near term, the decisive milestones are closing, executed power arrangements and the construction and energisation schedule. If those deliver a reliable supply at an attractive total cost, the project could demonstrate a repeatable model for locating compute near generation. The evidence should be metered operation and enforceable supply terms, rather than assuming a wind-adjacent site has eliminated grid dependence.
